An analytic instrument company needed a special base plate with controlled thermal expansion rate. We worked with the engineer and we selected a special iron nickel alloy that matched the needs of the customer.

Unfortunately this material was not available in plate, so we purchased large round stock (10” diameter) and sliced off pieces that were .500” thick. These parts needed to be flat and parallel within .0003” so we went to great lengths to ensure this precision requirement. We rough machined the parts on a CNC lathe, and then heat treated the blank to relieve all of the stresses that were in the metal. The part then went through 10 more steps including milling, grinding, and finally precision lapping to achieve flatness and parallelism. We have produced over 1000 of these parts in the last four years.
